Paesaggi domestici di Bert Teunissen

Bert Teunissen è un fotografo nato a Ruurlo, Paesi Bassi, nel 1959.
Durante gli ultimi tredici anni ha lavorato su un progetto fotografico (attualmente ancora in corso) chiamato Domestic Landscapes - Paesaggi Domestici. Ha documentato centinaia di vecchie case europee, catturando con la sua macchina fotografica un’atmosfera ed una luce che stanno lentamente scomparendo, una memoria collettiva della realtà della gente.

Gli è stato assegnato un contributo del *Balkan Incentive Fund for Culture per documentare le aree più remote e rurali dell'Europa orientale, dove l'urbanizzazione non ha ancora cambiato il modo originale di vivere; ogni fotografia si compone intorno al concetto della luce come anche erano composti gli edifici stessi. Essi hanno le loro origini nell’epoca “pre-elettrica”, quando la luce diurna era la principale fonte di illuminazione. E’ una luce vecchia, antica, di quelle che raramente si vedono ancora.

Domestic Landscapes racconta anche dell'identità e della diversità. Ogni paese, ogni regione ha una sua propria cultura distintiva che può essere riconosciuta nelle case e nelle tradizioni.

Il titolo si riferisce anche all'idea che le case che ha fotografato formano un paesaggio della vita delle persone che vi hanno vissuto, che sono invecchiate con i loro habitat e sono diventate parte di esso.

"Le loro case ed i loro modi di vivere stanno dissolvendosi scomparendo dalle nostre società, per sempre, insieme con le loro conoscenze. Il mio scopo è di catturare tutto questo, dovunque io possa trovarlo, prima che scompaia del tutto.", Bert Teunissen dice, commentando il suo lavoro.

Con l'aiuto finanziario della Fondazione Mondrian, del Fondo olandese BKVB e del Hazazah Film & Photography, il progetto è diventato pronto per la pubblicazione. E’ stato pubblicato un libro fotografico per divulgare l'approccio ed i risultati del progetto, perché l'artista ha anche tenuto seminari e conferenze sui suoi viaggi.

Bert Teunissen is a photographer who was born in Ruurlo, the Netherlands, in 1959.
For the last thirteen years he has been working on an ongoing photography project called Domestic Landscapes. He has documented hundreds of old European homes capturing with his camera a slowly disappearing atmosphere and light, a collective memory of people’s realities.

Bert Teunissen was awarded a grant from the *Balkan Incentive Fund for Culture to document the most remote and rural areas of Eastern Europe, where urbanization did not change the original way of living yet; each photograph is composed around the idea of light, the same way that buildings themselves were composed. They have their origins in the pre-electricity era, when daylight was the main source of light. It's an old and antique light, the kind you rarely see anymore.

Domestic Landscapes is about identity and diversity too. Every country, every region has its own distinctive culture that can be recognized in its homes and traditions.

It also refers to the idea that homes that he photographed form the landscape of the life of the people that live in them; people that have aged together with their habitats and that have become part of it.
“Their houses and their way of life are fading out of our societies, forever, together with their knowledge. It is my aim to capture this, wherever I can find it, before it disappears completely.”, Bert Teunissen says, commenting on his work.

Through the financial help of The Mondriaan Foundation, The Dutch BKVB Fund and Hazazah Film & Photography, the project became ready for publication. A photographic book has been published to disseminate the project’s approach and outcome, as the artist’s travels, workshops and lectures has been given.
